Pretty damn good, but not quite purrrfect

In his new attempt to destroy the Thundercats, Mumm-Ra summons Hachiman, a samurai warrior, to face off with the Thundercats. However, Mumm-Ra lies to Hachiman and tells him that the Thundercats are evil, and Hachiman, not knowing any better, believes the evil wizard.

Meanwhile, the Thundercats have offered to set-up an alarm system for the warrior maidens that live in the Treetop Kingdom. That way, if the warriror maidens were to fall into danger, the Thundercats would know to come aide them. Lion-O goes with the warrior woman, Nayda to journey by foot to the treetop kingdom to meet Willa and the other women. On their way there, they have to cross a log bridge to keep from having to go the long way around and have it take an extra day to get to the Treetop Kingdom. However, while crossing the log over the giant hole known as "The 4 Day Drop", they encounter Hachiman, who's also trying to cross the log. However, since Lion-O and Hachiman both have too much pride, they both refuse to back away so the other man can get to the other side of the hole. In a game of chicken of sorts, they both pull out their swords and begin slicing away at the log until one decides to back off. Since neither man will budge, Nayda interjects herself and forces the 2 to stop just as the log breaks in 2 and before they take the big fall.

Afterward, Hachiman learns that the young man he was fighting was indeed Lion-O and then tries to draw his sword so he can destroy him like Mumm-Ra asked. However, just like Lion-O's Sword Of Omens, Hachiman's sword, the Thunder-Cutter, will not draw to attack someone that is not evil. After this startling revelation, Lion-O tells Hachiman that he was tricked by Mumm-Ra and that he's really the evil one. Hachiman appologizes for his actions and joins forces with Lion-O and Nayda as they go with Hachiman to the Treetop Kingdom.

Meanwhile, Mumm-Ra is not happy that Hachiman has turned against him, so he sends Slithe and the Mutants out to attack the 3. They are defeated and Slithe is captured. Lion-O, Hachiman, and Nayda then arrive at the Treetop Kingdom with Slithe and he is locked up. Meanwhile, Monkian and Jackalman express their concern to Mumm-Ra about Slithe's capture and he agrees to help them. Since Mumm-Ra knows that Lion-O and the other will be expecting them to negotiate for Slithe's release, Mumm-Ra sends a dark and unknown ninja, disquised as a Tabbot to go to the treetop kingdom and pretend to represent Mumm-Ra and the Mutants as a negotiator for the return to Slithe. After Willa orders for him to be kept on watch overnight, the ninja gets out of his Tabbot disquise later that night and uses a spell to put all the warrior maidens into a deep sleep. Then the ninja unlocks Slithe's cell and tells him that the big Mutant army plans to attack at dawn and for him to be ready.

The Mutants do attack at dawn and Slithe is freed and escapes with the others. Hachiman then fights the ninja and is able to defeat him. Lion-O, Hachiman, and the warrior women are able to defeat and drive the Mutants away, making all right on Third Earth again.

Purrsia's two cents:

For an Overgard episode, this isn't half bad. Lion-O's pride and stubborness on the log was great - he can be such a dork sometimes, no?

I also like the conversation the fans had about the Four Day Drop on one of the message boards recently - basically, the concept is impossible so yes, that's more famous (or infamous) Overgardian Physics for you ;)

Canon Fact of Note:

This is Hachiman's debut. If LFS-y memory serves me typically, I want to say he showed up in 4 more episodes (in two parts of ThunderCats Ho!, Hachiman's Honor, and The Jade Dragon)

Pfisiar: I like this episode quite a bit. For one, the sword doesn't act like a catch all deus ex machina. In fact, Lion-O's overreliance on the sword becomes something of an issue when he can't use it against Hachiman. - - The only sticking point for me was the ninja. I didn't care for him.

PKELL: There are a few plot problems with the episode (what happened to the Ninja? Why did the Mutants force just run away after the ThunderTank showed up? Who the hell actually measured the Four Day Drop?!) But overall the episode is entertaining. - - This is Hachiman's best appearence for sure. The Japanese quality of the animation for this show made it stand out among other American cartoons at the time, and an oriental charater liek Hachiman fit in perfectly. - - The confrontation between Lion-O and Hachiman on the log was the best part of the episode. And having Nada, a strong female character, commenting on the males' stubborness made it more enjoyable to watch. - - Hachiman is a character I've always liked, bu tunfortunately most of his appearances are not that strong. If you are a fan of the character, this is the best you will ever see him in.

leppardra: Another story I liked a great deal. The ThunderCutter being the Third Earth equivalent of the Sword of Omens is a great idea; it makes Hachiman mirror Lion-O. Small wonder the two became friends, as both could see they were cut from the same cloth, so to speak. Hachiman should have been made an honorary member of the League of Third Earth. He certainly earned his position in that group. For some reason, unlike with Willa, I love seeing Lion-O save the falling Nayda with the Sword of Omens; it's one more inspiration for my current fan fiction.
