Howard Post Reviewed by: Purrsia ![]() Mumm-Ra summons the Driller and hatches a scheme to have the pointy-headed evil-doer kidnap (or should that be "catnap"?) Panthro in exchange for diamonds. Needing diamonds to keep his drill points in top working order, the Driller happily obliges the ole bone bag. He succeeds in drilling his way through Panthro's bedroom floor. Before the Sands of Sleep potion pulls Panthro under it's hypnogogic effects, he and the Driller engage in a brief skirmish. The Driller then delivers his burly and blue cargo to Mumm-Ra and goes on his merry way with his diamond payment. Mumm-Ra makes a mold out of Panthro's sleeping form and uses the mold to make a clone of the ThunderCat. He must have sent away for one of those mail-order chemistry sets, heh heh. Mumm-Ra then summons the spirit of Hammerhand to give his new Panthro clone the proper destructive spirit. Deciding the real Panthro is pretty dern useless to him now, Mumm-Ra flies out of the Pyramid with him, and drops him into the Bottomless Chasm. Meanwhile, Lion-O gets the heads-up from the Sword that Panthro is in trouble. He sees Mumm-Ra flying with Panthro. The Eye's vision gets blocked by cosmic rays shooting out of the chasm every 30 seconds or so, so Lion-O fails to see exactly where it is Mumm-Ra deposited Panthro. The ThunderCats decide to search the countryside for their friend. While they search, the evil Panthro clone is out and about, crushing villages, setting crops on fire and loving every minute of it. And just as Mummsie hoped, the terrified citizens of Third Earth begin to turn against the ThunderCats. Lion-O ends up finding the real Panthro just as he emerges from the Chasm. Panthro is exhausted from his harrowing climb and Lion-O gets a call from Cheetara to head over to the Wolo village ASAP. When he arrives with Panthro, a Wolo accuses Panthro of being the one that burned the Village to the ground. Despite Panthro's denials and Lion-O's pledge to help them rebuild, the Wolo is adamant that the ThunderCats will never be trusted again. Panthro leaves in the Tank, and shortly thereafter, the evil clone returns and picks a fight with Lion-O. Lion-O, thinking the clone is the real Panthro, calls for reinforcements with the SoO. Of course, the real Panthro responds to the summons, and all hell breaks lose as the two begin to fight. Lion-O freaks out because he can't tell the real Panthro from the fake. That's when Snarf comes up with the brilliant idea of using the Sword to ferret out and destroy the fake Panthro. Worked like a charm, doncha know? Hammerhand's spirit returns to the Black Pyramid just as Mumm-Ra is preparing to create yet another Panthro clone with his mold. Hammerhand puts a decisive end to Mumm-Ra's cloning days when he smashes the mold to bits. "Come here, my deadly toy." -- Mumm-Ra to his freshly minted Panthro clone. 1) Panthro is dressed in only a belt and some boots when the Driller `catnaps' him. However, he's in full uniform in the next scene where Mumm-Ra clones him.... 2) Is the bottomless chasm in this episode the same one as that featured in Lord of the Snows? Although this one seems to be in desert terrain, and the one from "Snows" was, uh, in the snow, it could be the same chasm. You know, Third Earth could have like a giant crack running down the middle of it (there's an ass joke in there somewhere...). Then again, maybe Third Earthlings aren't terribly original when naming their landmarks.... 3) Mumm-Ra summons Hammerhand from his "watery grave" , which implies the thrice-repeating pirate died at the end of "The Terror of Hammerhand". However, later in the series ("ThunderCats Ho!" to be exact), Hammerhand is alive and well... Jamie: This is one of my fav episodes and again lin-o uses the sword to do his fighting, i wonder how well he does in his anoitment wer he has to lay down the sword lol ?? hmmm Captain Shiner: Is that Hammerhands official resurrection? leppardra: This is one of the best episodes. I like how it's animated, and the fight between the two Panthros against that blazing backdrop of fire is memorable. And if this is HammerHand's official resurrection, then where'd he get his new body, new ship, and new from from? Berserkers 'R Us? Jeremy: I couldn't stand this episode. I mean...the Driller? C'mon?! He's quite the lame character. I did like the fact that they brought hammerhead back (although they didn't really "show" him-just sorta his outline) and the Panthro clone idea was kind of cool. In RB's defense this was the era of weird characters (He-man was chock full of 'em), still the driller was about as goofy as you can get. This one sucked more than George Michael in a park bathroom. bosun's mittens: This would never work today. Kids watch too much CSI. "Where's the DNA lab, then?"
