5. Pumm-Ra

Pretty damn good, but not quite purrrfect

Mumm-Ra devises a perty swell scheme to get those blasted ThunderCats, and their little snarf, too. First, he has his Mutie comrades drug Cheetara and capture her. Next, he takes on the form of a Thunderian and poorly dubs himself "Pumm-Ra". Either the ThunderCats are dumb enough not to make the obvious connection when they subsequently meet Pumm-Ra, or the writers made the name similar for the sake of not confuzzling the little 'uns watching the show.

Anyway, they allow Pumm-Ra to stay at the Lair out of greatfullness for his "saving" Cheetara, but are hesitant to fully take him into the fold. No matter. While the ThunderCats are dallying about in a council meeting trying to decide whether to outright accept Pumm-Ra or put him on probation, the ole puma is having the time of his life tearing up the Lair and the ThunderTank. He also figures out how to get into the Sword chamber (wouldn't ya know it. The Tcats used a 1,000 year old Egyptian tomb gimmick to lock that chamber...and just who else happens to be 1,000 years old and from Egypt? heh heh) and swipes the Sword of Omens.

The plot thickens when the other ThunderCats venture out, leaving Lion-O and Snarf alone with Pumm-Ra at the Lair. A bit later, Lion-O realizes the Lair has been sabotaged and the Sword is missing. Confronting Pumm-Ra, Lion-O learns the awful truth. Pumm-Ra makes the mistake of trying to use the Sword for evil intent. This opens the door for Lion-O and his fellow felines to deliver a swift ass-kicking to Pumm-Ra/Mumm-Ra. Overall, a  nice lesson in first impressions.

Fave Quote:

"The mystic Sword of Omens cannot be used for evil. Attempt it, and know the wrath of Jaga." --Jaga.

Canon Facts of Note:

Tygra clocks Cheetara's speed at 30 seconds for the mile.

We also discover that Jaga chose Tygra to be  head of the ThunderCats Council.

Mumm-Ra confirms that he's been skulking about for at least 1,000 years.

This 'sode marks the Tcats first up-close gander at Mumm-Ra.

For the Trivia Books:

This episode marks the only variation in the series of Mumm-Ra's famous transformation incantation : "Ancient Spirits of Evil, transform this ancient body to Mumm-Ra, the Everliving."

Something I find odd:

As Pumm-Ra is ran-sacking the Lair in search of the Sword, he comes upon a weapons room loaded with ray guns, etc...weapons we see the ThunderCats actually use in nary an episode, heh heh.

PKELL: The thing I loved about this episode was just how crafty Mumm-Ra came off. He completely fooled the T-Cats without overpowering them or using any kind of magic on them. He just changed his shape and put on the best acting performance he possibly could and it worked. - - Did anyone else think the giant insect that Pumm-Ra sent after Panthro looked like Mothra? Being a fan of Godzilla and other Japanese monsters, I always got a kick out of that. - - The scene where The Power of the Eye of Thundera turns on Pumm-Ra is actually one of my favorite in the series. We learn that the power of the Sword is incorruptable, and their are consequences to trying to use its power for evil. Jaga's presence and delivering that great quote made it even better. - - Speaking of Jaga, he appeared to Lion-O 3 times in this one. Lion-O must have really been screwing up huh?

Jasonred: Well, Pkell, in this case, it was Moth-Ra. ;)

Bobby Come Lately: PKELL -- his scheme was unfaily assisted by the fact that the Thundercats were dimwits. Seriously, they fell for 'Pumm-Ra'. If I were Mumm-ra, I would have just picked up one of those ray guns and shot Lion-O between the eyes and insisted that I didn't do it. They would have probably believed me.

leppardra: This is another favorite of mine. However, Mumm-Ra first indicated in "The Unholy Alliance" tale that he'd been around for 1,000 years, so his confirmation of it here is redundant. As for the rayguns, "ThunderCats" isn't the first TV show to drop an idea in favor of something else. Lion-O's impatience was making itself known, so, yes, Jaga had to rein him in. What I wonder about is where the ThunderKittens were during all this commotion. Wouldn't they also have been affected by Pumm-Ra/Mumm-Ra trying to use the Sword, and come running to Lion-O's aid?

Nick: I really enjoyed this episode, because (aside from the obvious), it showed what TCat fans have been talking about for many, many years-- Lion-O may have been the appointed leader of the TCats, but he still had the mind of an adolescent. When Tygra suggests that he should enter Cat's Lair since he is the architect, Lion-O rather childishly declares: "But I have the SWORD!!!" This prompts Jaga to inform the young leader that ingenuity is required, not bravery and strength. Basically, Jaga said: "Lion, quit acting like a b****!"
