Not bad, but not fabulotastic neither...

The Thundernewbs are flying the Thunderstrike towards ‘Cats Lair, and it’s obvious that something’s not right when the ship almost crashes into the Lair. Bengali and Pumyra eject the two side pods from the Thunderstrike and land on the ground. They run towards the others and explain that Lynx-O has lost his mind. Bengali was piloting the ship from the left pod, but Lynx-O took control of the ship with the Braile Board and ejected the two pods.

Lion-O and Panthro then take the Thunderclaw into the air to see what is wrong with the old man. Lion-O jumps off the Thunderclaw onto the Thunderstrike and pounds on the glass while Lynx-O is yelling something about “evil beyond evil”. Lion-O then uses the sword to take control of Lynx-O’s mind and force him to land the Thunderstrike. After everyone is safely on the ground, the Thundercats take the exhausted Lynx-O to a bedroom so he can rest.

Lion-O then asks Pumyra and Bengali what caused Lynx-O’s behavior. Bengali then says that the night before, Lynx-O was working with the Braile Board at the Tower Of Omens, when he got signals so terrible, that it made him start flipping out and spouting off giberish about a mask, a child, and a book, and something called the hills of Elfshima. Lion-O then explains that Elfshima is the range of hills beyond Mumm-Ra’s pyramid.

At Mumm-Ra’s pyramid, the mummy is reading from a large book that details the complete history of Third Earth. It appears that Ma-Mutt dug it up while he was looking for a bone. In the book, there is talk about a mask known as the Mask Of Gorgon. Turns out that the mask has the power to turn living flesh into solid stone. Mumm-Ra then summons Tug-Mug and Chilla of the Lunatacs to get the mask for him, which is mounted on Shemlock, the oldest and mightiest tree in the Treetop Kingdom. Tug-Mug and Chilla then arrive at the Treetop Kingdom in the Ice Runner and are confronted by the Warrior Maidens.

Chilla then freezes Nayda as Willa escapes to go find help. The other warrior women are frozen, along with the Shemlock tree. Tug-Mug then uses his gravity carbine gun to bring the Mask Of Gorgon down to the ground. When the eyes of the mask open, it shoots fireballs at Chilla and Tug-Mug that turn them to stone. Mumm-Ra sees these events transpire in the cauldron and laughs at the two Lunatacs’ mis-fortune. He exclaims that he had to use them, in order to avoid the mask from turning himself to stone. Mumm-Ra then uses a chant from his giant book to bring the Mask Of Gorgon to him, and also to avoid it from turning him or Ma-Mutt to stone. Mumm-Ra then exclaims that he plans to use the Sword Of Omens’ sight beyond sight to reverse the powers of the Mask Of Gorgon to turn stone into flesh, instead of the other way around.

Meanwhile, at ‘Cats’ Lair, Willa arrives and tells the others what happened at the Treetop Kingdom. They all offer to go to Mumm-Ra’s pyramid to get the mask back. Lynx-O then awakes from his sleep and volunteers to help, but is turned down when the other ‘Cats hear him spouting off more giberish about a child and the hills of Elfshima. Lion-O and the ‘Cats then decide to go to Mumm-Ra’s pyramid to investigate and Bengali is told to stay with Lynx-O at the Lair.

Lion-O, Panthro, Tygra, Cheetara, and Willa arrive at Mumm-Ra’s pyramid, only to find Nayda there, who for some reason, is no longer frozen. However, something doesn’t seem right when Nayda calls Willa by her own name, instead of her sister’s. They go to Mumm-Ra’s sarcofigus chamber and see the Mask Of Gorgon, but no Mumm-Ra. Turns out that Nayda was just Mumm-Ra in disquise. Mumm-Ra then uses the mask to turn the ‘Cats and Willa to stone. Mumm-Ra then takes the sword from Lion-O’s hand and opens the pyramid doors to reveal the hills of Elfshima. Mumm-Ra tells the frozen ‘Cats to wait until the dawn comes to see how the hills resemble a sleeping form.

Meanwhile, back at the Lair, Lynx-O awakes after more sleeping and insists that Bengali take him to the Thunderstrike and let him fly to the pyramid, before it means the end of Third Earth. After the two Thundernewbs fly away in the ship, Lynx-O tells Bengali that the name Elfshima is just a puzzle with a hidden message. The message being “I am flesh”, meaning that the hills of Elfshima are really a sleeping giant that was turned to stone thousands of years ago. Lynx-O then exclaims that he has a plan to destroy the giant.

Back at Mumm-Ra’s pyramid, Mumm-Ra uses the Sword Of Omens’ sight beyond sight with the masks’ power to give life to the sleeping giant. The giant awakes after its eternal slumber and begins walking through the land, destroying trees and such. Lynx-O and Bengali then arrive in the Thunderstrike and go inside of the giant’s ears. Lynx-O explains that if they blast the giant’s inner ear, that it will throw it off balance and hopefully make it fall to the ground. They then blast the inner ear with the lazer cannons and the giant shakes violently. The Thunderstrike makes it out of the giant just as it falls to the ground and causes an earthquake. The earthquake causes the Mask of Gorgon to fall out of the pyramid and break when it lands on the ground outside. Once it is broken, the giant turns back into the hills of Elfshima and the Thundercats, Willa, the Warrior Maidens, Tug-Mug, and Chilla all turn back to their normal states.

Tug-Mug and Chilla then board the Ice Runner and escape. Back in Mumm-Ra’s pyramid, Lion-O uses the sword to destroy Mumm-Ra’s giant book, along with all the horrible stuff it contained.

Purrsia's Two Cents:

I kinda like the borrowed concept of Medusa coupled with old Third Earth legend in this episode. And there was an anagram as part of the puzzle which is a bonus ^_^

The only puzzler is how Mumm-Ra got the Sword to work for him - I thought it didn't respond to the evil hand and/or wouldn't work if it knew the act being committed had evil means. Typical plot inconsistancy!

As for the child of Elfshima, vertigo's a bitch, eh? mwahahahaha!

azmom2624: Did any one notice at the end where Willa and Nayda switched voices?

leppardra: I enjoyed this story, it's one of the best. The borrowings from mythology are apparent. I have to agree that I don't know how the Sword obeyed Mumm-Ra unless it was actually obeying the Mask of Gordon. But premise changes are part of the nature of serial TV, animated or live-action. The "child" is called the Child of Gorgon, not the Child of Elfshima. And, yes, I also noticed Willa's and Nayda's voice swap. That's a glaring error that worked its way into the episode and was not caught in time.
