79. The Mad Bubbler

This ep is so bad, it makes Lion-O's hair look stylish by comparison.

It begins on Hook Mountain, where Snowman and Snowmeow are venturing in the snow and cold. Snowmeow detours to check out an abandoned mine that's half boarded-over, and this upsets Snowman. Luckily, some creepy laughter scares the big snow cat out of the mine before he goes too far in, and Snowman explains that the mine is dangerous for more than one reason, adding cryptically that many miners have gone in but none have come out.

Cut to Sky Tomb where Alluro is discussing the existence of a mine on Hook Mountain just teeming with Thundrillium, which is what they need to power the Lunie fortress, Sky Tomb. Alluro is aware of a "superstition" that keeps Third Earthers out of the mine, but he seems unimpressed. Luna figures if they can control such an amount of Thundrillium, the ThunderCats would be at their mercy as it is also their main power source. So it's settled, and Chilla, Luna and Amok are off to the mine!

Arriving, they run into Snowman who forbids them to enter the mine - he's actually concerned for their safety! To get Snowman out of their way, Chilla creates what is basically an ice grenade out of her icy breath. Snowman is knocked out of the way, but still tries to stop them. Chilla shoots fire into the nearby woods, so while Snowman is preoccupied with trying to tame the forest fire, into the mine they go. Snowman sends Snowmeow to get the Thundercats to help.

Luna and Chilla are gloating over their pure Thundrillium find when a dude that looks like a giant frog/lizard thing appears and introduces himself as the Mad Bubbler. He traps them in harmless-looking bubbles, but looks are deceiving. As Chilla complains of feeling choked, the Bubbler explains that breathing the vapors in the bubbles will feed on the evil in one's heart, causing it to grow until you become consumed by your own evil and violent impulses - it's even got a name: Mind Madness. Do the Lunataks really need an enhancement in this department? Talk about overkill...

When their bubbles burst, Chilla and Amok/Luna are consumed with the madness. Armed with the mantra "destroy or be destroyed", they try to shred each other. Chilla seems to have won when she ices the stubby duo, but soon after she exits, Amok breaks the ice and follows her toward the exit of the cave.

Meanwhile, Snarf is helping to install some kind of tracking device at the Tower of Omens. At the Lair, Panthro finds Snowmeow lurking outside but can't understand what the big cat is trying to tell him. Cheetara gleans a telepathic impulse from the cat, which tells her of Snowman's predicament. Panthro, Cheetara and Tygra head off with Snowmeow in the Feliner to help. The Feliner arrives just in time to turn into a flying, spinning water sprinkler to control the fire. Oh brother.

Snowman is swept into a rapidly thawing lake thanks to the heat from the fire. Panthro attempts to rescue him, but it's a disaster ending with both mean shuttling toward a perilous waterfall. Tygra and Cheetara try to do some tricks with the Feliner hoping to "quick freeze" the water. Oh brother squared. It works, freezing them mid-waterfall.

Afterwards, Snowmeow tells them about the Lunies and the mine. He also warns them about the dangers of the cave but Panthro's response is that the previous fools who went into the mine weren't Thundercats. The 'Cats go into the cave and think nothing of the Lunataks fighting among themselves. Then the Mad Bubbler appears. They get caught in bubbles and emerge fighting each other just like the Lunies did - even Tcats have evil in their hearts!

The Lunataks somehow make it out of the cave by smashing out a wall in it and landing in the snow. Once outside, the spell is broken. Though Chilla notes that the mine is "inoperable for their purposes", both ladies laugh about the Thundercats being trapped inside.

Lion-O is in the Berbil village when the Sword alerts him to the mine troubles. He's going to rush off to help, but Robear Bill warns him of the legend of the mine. Lion-O scoffs at the idea that any Thundercat would be capable of evil but Jaga appears to set him straight. He adds that there's only one species in the whole universe completely devoid of evil: the Snarf. So only Snarf can save the day. Again. Blech.

Once he gets to Hook Mountain, Lion-O signals with the Sword to get the Snarfs to come to him. He quickly fills them in on the situation and sends them into the mine to rescue the others. The Mad Bubbler tries his trick on the Snarfs but to no effect. Now they just have to save the others. They accomplish this by stealing Panthro and Cheetara's weapons and getting them all to chase them out of the mine (although, why Cheetara, a freaking *cheetah* for Jaga's sake, can't catch two fat furballs is beyond me). The pair are caught at the end of the mine but Lion-O is in range to use the Sword to snap the 'Cats out of it before they destroy the Snarfs.

So close to a perfect ending and Lion-O and his stupid uber tool had to ruin it. WTF indeed. *sulk*

Canon Facts of Note:

This episode established that Snarfs as a species are incapable of evil. Yeah. RIGHT.

Fave Quote:

"Anyone who can put up with all of us is pretty super-heroic in my book." - Lion-O, assuring Snarf of his super hero status.

"I am the Mad Bubbler. Welcome. I hope you like bubbles!" - The Mad Bubbler, introducing himself to the Lunataks.

"P-U. What a stench." - Snarf's remarks about the Mad Bubbler and his bubbles and sums up my feelings about this episode nicely.
