Leonard Starr Reviewed by: Purrsia ![]() Two poor Balkan travellers come upon a centuries-old tomb and get the bright idea to see if there is treasure buried with whoever lies within. They open the tomb, get freaked out and skeedattle. However, they break the magic seal on the door which was all that kept the spirit of Grune the Destroyer from wreaking havoc once again. Grune is happier than a Tabbot rolling around naked in gold coins to be free. He sets off and soon comes upon Cats Lair, which he recognizes as a Thunderian stronghold. Though he wonders why such a structure is on Third Earth, he's stoked to know that there willl be Thundrillium within, which will give him great strength. Being a ghost, he walks right into the Lair and drains it of power, much to the ThunderCats' puzzlement. When he finally shows himself to them, they are shocked to find he knows who they are. So, even though it taxes her greatly, Cheetara calls forth a psychic vision. She learns that Jaga and Grune were once friends back on Thundera and that Grune was a former ThunderCat. That is until Grune turned wicked and began to pilage and destroy cities on Thundera. Jaga had little choice but to exile Grune. Apparently, he ended up on Third Earth where he terrorized Third Earthlings. Modern day Third Earthers know of the Legend of Grune and come to the ThunderCats for help after Grune spends an evening literally stomping out their villages. They warn the ThunderCats that Grune was looking for fire rocks, or Thundranium as Thunderians know it. This substance weakens ThunderCats. Since Grune is no longer a ThunderCat, it doens't affect him. After forging his club out of Thundranium, Grune returns to the Lair to have his vengence on the ThunderCats. It didn't take long to realize Grune's real beef was with Jaga, and so Lion-O calls on the spirit of his old mentor to have it out with the mighty saber tooth cat. The subsequent battle scene is nothing short of fabulous. And just when Grune thinks he outsmarted the old jaguar, he gets what's coming to him. "Better an honest enemy than a false friend." ---Jaga's wise words. We learn the SoO has no psychic powers. Second Sight can only reveal events in the present. Jaga is so in tune with the SoO, he can command it without words. Grune supposedly languished in his tomb for centuries on Third Earth....if this is true and he and Jaga were buds on Thundera, that makes Jaga waaaaaay more geriatric than I ever fathomed! Pfisiar: He truly is a bad ass villain and he should have been used more than he was. But I liked the message in this one better. "Better an honest enemy than a dishonest freind." Shay Leona: This was the very first episode I watched of Thundercats and I immediately fell in love with the show. It's one of my favorties.I also think they really should've used Grune more often. He was a great villain. He kinda scared me when I was little, with him haunting Cat's Lair, his evil deep voice and his appearance just looked scary to me.Jaga's infamous quote I think is one of the best quotes in this series. "Better than honest enemy than a false friend." So true Jaga, so true... leppardra: Wonderful, wonderful story! Of course, Jaga is older than Grune; the Thundera flashback shows that. I agree with PKell about Grune handling the Thundrainium, especially when you remember Lynx-O's comment in "ThunderCats, Ho" that Thundrainium weakens all Thunderians - and Grune is a Thunderian. The only other drawback is where Lion-O is summoning Jaga to fight Grune. Look closely at Lion-O face in that scene and you'll note he's suddenly cross-eyed! leppardra: I watched this episode twice yesterday and noted a very funny animation glitch in the scene where a group of Wolloes, Berbils, and Bolkins are at the Lair, telling Lion-O and Tygra about Grune the Destroyer's return. The group is watching Lion-O as he paces back and forth in front of them. But when he walks to the right, they look to the left, and when he walks to the left they look to the right! Cougar: I had a chance to watch this episode in its entirety... and I'm 27 years old! I remember when I was in Second Grade and I saw this episode, I kinda thought that Jaga wasn't gonna win this bout with Grune... until Lion-O commanded Jaga to "take my strength."

- At 27 years old, this episode teaches me a whole lot. First of all, Jaga was absolutely right when he said: "Bette an honest enemy than a false friend... you must tell which is which." I admire the fact that Jaga just up and let Grune take the Sword of Omens from him; it's like Jaga said in a later episode (in Season II): "All who achieve such power are ultimately destroyed." Jaga is truly the star in this show! 5 of 7 comments (part 1) [ » ] [ * ]
