Great Holy Jaga! This 'sode rawks!!

Tired of losing time and time again to Lion-O and that darn Sword of Omens, Mumm-Ra voices his frustrations to the ASOE. In turn, the ASOE weave a tale of a powerful sword from the ancient world called Excalibur and how noble King Arthur used it for the betterment of all mankind. Mumm-Ra wonders what this has to do with anything until he mulls over the last bit of the ASOE's story of Excalibur, which was that it waits with the Lady of the Lake for King Arthur's return. Transforming into Arthur, Mumm-Ra easily fools the Lady into giving up Excalibur.

Next thing you know, 'Arthur' shows up at Cats Lair announcing that he wishes to uphold the ideals of Justice, Truth, Honor and Loyalty in the hopes of defeating Mumm-Ra. This appears appealing to the ThunderCats, even though the stranger's aloof and rude manner catches them off-guard. Even still, they invite him inside to talk about joining forces.

Once in the council room, Mumm-Ra continues to offend and insult the ThunderCats, even snidely remarking that the Sword of Omens appears to be no match for Excalibur. Tempers flare as Lion-O's pride is bruised, which culminates in 'Arthur' slapping Lion-O accross the face with his gloves and demanding they joust to settle things. Lion-O agrees.

The joust takes place in front of the Lair, and the other adult 'Cats watch from one of the Lair's windows. Cheetara seems to be the only one who thinks the whole ordeal is ridiculous, as to her fighting merely for the sake of one's pride is foolish. But the joust goes on. In the first pass, 'Arthur's' lance is broken. In the second pass, both are knocked from their horses. 'Arthur' then challenges Lion-O to a sword duel.

But what happens next neither expected - the swords take on a life of their own and, leaving their master's hands, begin a chase one another in the skies. All watch in wonder as the two mighty blades clash and clang above them. But for the ThunderCats, it ends badly as Excalibur pierces the Eye of Thundera. The Sword of Omens falls to the ground and, without the source of their power, the ThunderCats' insignias disappear from their uniform and they collapse, helpless.

Mumm-Ra can't believe his luck and takes a moment to gloat - of course, in the process revealing that he's in disguise. But when he tries to retrieve Excalibur from where it landed upright in the earth so that he can finish Lion-O off, it won't budge. Suddenly, Merlin appears from the blade because he simply won't allow Excalibur to be used for Mumm-Ra's evil means. After Merlin sends Mumm-Ra packing, he repairs the Sword of Omens so that all is well with the ThunderCats again. Then he offers Excalibur to Lion-O, who refuses it. Rather, Lion-O bids Merlin return it to the Lady of the Lake.
As Lion-O and Snarf discuss the dangers of too much pride, Lion-O uses second sight to witness the return of Excalibur to its rightful place.

This one got a 5 star rating from me for several reasons:

1. The Sword of Omens doesn't save the day, and in fact, its Eye is destroyed mwahahahaha

2. Bringing the story of Arthur and Excalibur into ThunderCats was freakin' brilliant

3. Mumm-Ra's abuse of Lion-O as Arthur was at times absolutely hilarious. And he got bonus points for smacking Snarf across the room heh heh

4. The story was a good chance to show how Lion-O still has issues keeping his pride and impulsiveness under control

Fave Quote:

'Arthur': "You dare to argue with a knight?"

Lion-O: "I dare to -"

'Arthur': "Then let your toy sword speak for you!" [proceeds to take off his gloves and smack Lion-O across the face]
Canon Facts of Note:

A couple interesting things here.

**Melding the legend of Arthur into this story could be further evidence that Third Earth is our Earth in another time.

**It's interesting to see how the Eye's destruction affects the 'Cats. While it didn't kill them, they were awfully weak and helpless. Which makes sense - if summoning the Eye's powers gives them all renewed strength, destroying it would sap their strength.

Brian: Best episode of the series. As Katara states "Sword of Omens was defeated by Excalibur" which was totally unexpected.

Puma: The swordplay was excellent, and I think BOTH blades were evenly matched, just the eye stabbing was a lucky hit. Imagine dual-wielding both of them!
