3. Berbils

Not bad, but not fabulotastic neither

In this episode, Lion-O and Snarf explore the countryside and promptly get captured by deceptively cute mechanical bears.
Meanwhile, Mumm-Ra cooks up a storm fit to stone a cat to death...only he didn't count on Panthro's new 'baby', the ThunderTank, to save the day. Panthro constructed the Tank from the wreckage of the original spacecraft.

Whilst this is going on, Lion-O and Snarf think they've had it, only to discover that the Berbils are quite friendly. They are introduced to the four yummy varieties of  fruit the bears raise....Meatfruit, Breadfruit, Veggiefruit, and Candyfruit (Hah! I *knew* candy was a major food group!). Well, this turn of events cheezes Mummsie off so he sets out as a giant locust to destroy the Berbils' crop. Of course, he strikes out again.
The other ThunderCats meet the Berbils, who not only feed the felines a feast, but agree to help build Cats Lair.

Fave Quote:

Lion-O: "I think they're *called* Robear Berbils."

Snarf: "That's not what I've been calling them..."

Canon Facts of Note:

The Berbils aren't native to Third Earth either..they hail from the planet Robear.
Also, we see that Mumm-Ra can take alternate forms.

Canon Firsts:

This ep marks the first time Lion-O is told he can call the Sword to his hand.

New Sword Tricks:

Lion-O used the Sword to create a sheild before him. The Sword also flies our hero out of a volcano (?)

PKELL: Interesting note, this episode was heavily edited in the video release (which was the first four episodes strung together to make a movie) The scenes with The Trollogs and The Giantors were cut out of the release, and I didn't get to see this episode in it's entirety until 1997 when it was aired on Cartoon Network. - - However, the music cues in the video release are much better, most notably in the scene where Lion-O falls in the volcano. - - The Ro-Bear Berbils, the Ewoks of the TCats Universe, are a lovable race of characters. They are cute, but since they are robots and have a Soundwave like voice, they are also kind of cool making them appeal a little bit to both male and female audiences.

Captain Shiner: I distinctly remember seeing the uncut version of this episode on Going Live in 89 or 90.

leppardra: I like this story, but it's full of problems. The animation's a bit shoddy; the burly Lion-O can't break the ropes tying him to the stake; Panthro hates the word "scrounge" but then calls himself a champion "scrounger"; and the other ThunderCats act like they don't know what happened to Lion-O after watching him make the Mumm-Ra swarm locust leave the Berbils' crops alone. Like I said, problems.
