UK Issued Star Comics

Below you'll find images and summaries of the UK versions of the old comic series for ThunderCats, which ran in the 80s. There are 135 issues in all; this page covers issues 85-96. From what I can tell, they follow the continuum of the TV series pretty closely, yet new story lines and ideas are meshed within them as well. I also discovered that there's so many issues because one adventure is spread out over two issues.
This area is now complete!

'Ghost Story' - Text Story by Steve Alan
Panthro tells Bengali and Pumyra a story about ghosts he encoutered near Cat's Lair, called the Si-Tare. Out hunting next morning, Pumyra stumbles into the Sacred Sanctum of the Si-Tare. She is being watched by a Mutant called Kontos Ghoulshadow, who plans to take her captive. The Si-Tare step and help her without her knowing. They all go home and later that night Pumyra declares that she doesn't believe in ghost stories.

'Copy Cats!' Draw a Thundercat page
'Letters to the Lair!' - Questions asked include where does Mumm-Ra get his bandages (from his mummy - very bad joke), how high can Panthro jump (8 to 10 metres) and how does the Sword of Omens grow (apparently the Sword is magically miniaturised to make it easy to carry, but expands to fighting size at the magic words of the Thundercats' cry).

Conclusion of retelling of TV episode of the same name - interestingly, this story offers an explanation to the TV episode's ambiguous ending. The ship flies away, apologising for all the trouble it caused, and it says to Cheetara that it heard her wish and said that it is sure to come true, as long as she never tells the other Thundercats what it is. 'Mutations!' - Spot the difference game

'Blind Panic!' - Text Story by Steve Alan
Lion-O is suffering some self-doubts and Lynx-O sympathises, as he too has concerns what would happen should he run into trouble whilst out alone. Sure enough, he has to face his fears and emerges all the stronger for his ordeal.
Thunderart
'Copy Cats!' Draw a Thundercat page
'Letters to the Lair!' - Questions asked include what type of animal is Jaga (a jaguar); how old is Lion-O (according to this, he was 10-years-old when he arrived on Third Earth, although his body had grown into adulthood during the suspended animation journey); which Thundercat has the worst temper (Panthro, apparently) and how fast can Cheetara run (160kph).

#87 GAMES WITHOUT FRONTIERS PART 1

Issue #87 Cover
Issued 10 December 1988
Written by Andy Lanning & John Carnell. Art by Andy Wildman (art), Bambos (lettering) & Louise Cassell (colour).
Special thanks to Spaced Angel for the scans and information on this issue.

Mumm-Ra orders the Mutants and Hammerhand to challenge the Thundercats to a sporting contest and have Lion-O put the Sword of Omens on display as a symbol of their truce. Sure enough, the Thundercats accept the challenge and the games begin. The Mutants are determined to win by fair means or foul, and Monkian cheats during a race with Cheetara. Lion-O throws a hissy fit about the Thundercats losing their honour, which Mumm-Ra, watching in his cauldron, finds very interesting indeed.

'Drills and Spills!' - Text Story by Steve Alan
WilyKat gets a dressing down from Lion-O for messing about in the Control Room and as punishment he has to go with Bengali to help find Thundrillium. Meanwhile, Driller is making himself a tunnel. Suddenly, Lion-O and Tygra find themselves in the dark. Without power to the Lair, they are trapped. The air starts to get stale and they wonder if their friends will get to them in time. Bengali and WilyKat have found themselves a vein of Thundrillium and start to extract it, only to suck up Driller in the process. It turns out that Driller was planning to make a tunnel to Cat's Lair, but hit the power core instead. Lion-O, now rescued from the Lair, thanks WilyKat for saving his life.

'Mutations!' - Spot the difference puzzle
'Letters to the Lair!' - Questions asked include who is the wisest Thundercat apart from Jaga (Lynx-O), were there any lady Snarfs on Thundera (lots)and why did Lion-O age (interestingly, the answer is that Jaga deliberately made Lion-O age faster, so he would be old enough to lead the Thundercats when they finally reached Third Earth. Also, the explanation given for Thundera exploding is that the planet slipped off its axis and fell towards the sun).

Issued 24 December 1988

The games in question are Olympic style feats of althleticism that the ThunderCats compete in with the Mutants and Berzerkers. Of course, the Mutants take every opportunity to cheat as well as have an underlying objective - to help Mumm-Ra get the Sword of Omens!

Also included is a story that stars the female 'Cats called The Netherwitch. It's a short text story with numerous and glaring typos. The gist of it is, Cheetara is angry that Lion-O made her, Pumyra and WilyKit stay at the Lair while the men investigated why such a fierce storm was raging. They all suspected Mumm-Ra as the cause. But once Lynxana arrives and explains it's the Netherwitch on the Hovercat causing the storm that threatens to wash the Lair away, Cheetara runs counter to the wind and stops it. Unlike in the show, the Netherwitch is cast as a cackling old witch that does not appear to be simply Mumm-Ra in disguise.

#89 GAMES WITHOUT FRONTIERS PART 3

Issue #89 Cover Issue #89 Poster
Issued 7 January 1989
Written by Andy Lanning & John Carnell. Art by Wildman & Cassell

In this issue, which begins by concluding the 'Games' comic, Lion-O faces off against Hachiman. Though technically fighting for the Mutants' team, Hachiman did so only to test his skills against such a worthy fighter as Lion-O. Lion-O ends up losing after the Mutants had switched his fencing sword with one weaker than Hachiman's. Angered, he was going to summon the Sword of Omens to show the Mutants who is really the better sword fighter but Jaga intervenes, urging the Lord not to cheat to win. Honorably, Lion-O concedes defeat to Hachiman. But it's not over as the Mutants attack and Mumm-Ra makes a grab for the Sword. However, the Thundercats prevail in the end.

Afterwards there's another text story entitled Snow Surprise. It's Rammastide - the Third Earth version of Christmas - and the Thunderkittens are playing and building snow men in the newly fallen snow. Later that evening, while the Rammastide feast and celebration is going on in the Lair, the Mutatns are outside plotting an attack. They come upon snowmen that are made in the likeness of the Thundercats and their allies. But when they go to smash them, the Thundercats emerge causing Slithe to mutter, "Happy Rammastide everyone?!"

#90 COUNTRY OF THE BLIND

Issue #90 Cover Issue #90 Poster
Issued 21 January 1989
Written by Steve Alan. Art by Braithwaite, Baskerville & Peters

Two adventures await you in this issue. The first, in comics format, is Country of the Blind. In this adventure, a thunderstorm approaches at nightfall, and Lynx-O is sorrowful that he can't enjoy the wonderous light display with the others. The blind ThunderCat wanders off alone to think, only to fall into a chasm that opens beneath him. He lands in a strange, underground land where all its inhabitants are blind. After saving one of the natives from the dreaded Tongue-a-saurus, he's considering staying with these people as he feels a kinship with them due to their mutual handicap. Meanwhile, Lion-O awakes in darkness only to quickly realize he and the other ThunderCats are blind - presumably from the lightning the night before. Part two, I assume, would be in the subsequent issue.
Next is a text story called Kingdom of the Ice Cats. While the Mutants are bombarding the Lair with huge balls of snow intent on burying the fortress, Lion-O is out wandering around Hook Mountain. He went to meet Snowman for a hunting trip and out of pride went ill prepared - then a blizzard hit. Alone, lost and freezing, Lion-O feared he was suffering from snow madness when what appeared to be a female Thunderian approached. She turned out to be real and her name was Professor Growlinski. She and her snow leopard brother helped Lion-O get back to the Lair and drive back the Mutants.

#91 COUNTRY OF THE BLIND PART 2

Issue #91 Cover Issue #91 Poster Issue #91 Art
Issued 4 February 1989
Written by Steve Alan. Art by Braithwaite, Baskerville & Peters

Lynx-O, while in the land of Javarrn where everyone is blind, ventures off to a magical spring that is said to restore sight. The way is dangerous as the fountain is guarded by the Tounge-a-saurus. When Lynx-O arrives, he's distraught to find the water doesn't work (apparently, since his blindness was caused by falling debris and not the strange gas in the valley that caused the natives' blindness). In anguish, he cries out which causes an avanlanche that buries the approaching Tounge-a-saurus and the fountain. Lynx-O was only able to save a small sample of the waters to bring back to Breeze. When he returns to her village, Lion-O is waiting for him as he's distraught himself about the fact that he and the others were rendered blind by the storm. He urges Lynx-O to return to the surface and serve as the new Lord of the Thundercats. He goes only to find the others rejoicing - their sight had returned. Lion-O gives Lynx-O permission to return to Breeze and her people, but Lynx-O guesses that with her sight restored there'll be no bond between them any longer.

Following that is a text story title A Day Out for Bengali. It's quite short and simply details how Bengali, curious about tales of the Bridge of Light, ventures there by himself and gets into a spot of trouble. All turns out well in the end, of course.

#92 ASTRAL PRISON PART 1

Issue #92 Cover Issue #92 Poster Issue #92 Art Issue #92 Recipe
Issued 18 February 1989
Written by Zimmerman & Rimmer. Art by Baskerville & Euan

This Astral Prison tale is not the same as the episode of the same name. In this one, Mumm-Ra has set an elaborate trap by holding Jaga prisoner in the hopes of luring Lion-O to the Astral World to save him. With only limited power in the Eye of Thundera, Lion-O sets off to a cave that a disguised Mumm-Ra told him about where a master key supposedly can be found that will unlock the Astral Prison in which Jaga is trapped. It ends with Lion-O falling into a pit.

The text story, titled The Mystery Parcel, is a Valentine's day tale. It begins with Cheetara discovering a package outside the Lair before her morning run. Suspicious, she summons the other Thundercats who preceded to debate what sinister trap could lie inside. Lynx-O questions whether or not they're being too cautious in expecting the worst. And after Jaga appears and reminds Lion-O to think of what day it is, the Thundercat Lord rips open the package to discover flowers and chocolates inside - it was courtesy of the Warrior Maidens.

Lion-O and Snarf are overcome by sleeping gas and taken to Castle Plun-darr. Lion-O awakes to find the Sword gone. Snarf meanwhile is hanging above a cauldron of slime and not doing much about it. Continuation of series episode of the same name
Pin-up (!) of Cheetara in the middle pages - with the recommendation "much nicer than Kylie!" (we'll have to take their word for that!)
'Clockwork Chaos!' - text story by Ben Abnett
Two Warrior women, Betha and Zoe, are stuck atop Fire Rock Mountain after their hot air balloon crashes. With a storm brewing, Lion-O sends Tygra and Panthro to help them. Mumm-Ra sees this as the perfect time to launch an ambush and sends Monkian with a device that looks something like an old-fashioned record player, which, he claims, will produce an endless stream of mechanical warriors programmed to attack the first thing they see. The plan works well and Tygra and Panthro find themselves trapped between the sheer cliff and the robots. Betha and Zoe come to the rescue by sending down a rope and Tygra hits on the bright idea of using their balloon to escape. They drift away, leaving the robots to turn on Monkian.
'Make a Snarf Puppet!' - another make-and-play toy to keep the kiddies amused.
'Thundercats Ho! Ho! Ho!' - the joke page. Choice jokes included "Why couldn't the leopard escape from the zoo? He was always spotted"; "What cat lives in the ocean? An octopuss!" and "What do you get if you cross a cat with ball of wool? Mittens".

WilyKat accidentally injures Snarf, gets told off by Lion-O and goes off in a huff. He finds himself a cave, which he calls 'WilyKat's Lair'. What he doesn't know is that the cave walls contain high amounts of Thundranium ore. His strength is quickly sapped and he falls asleep. The other Thundercats meanwhile are concerned when he does not return home and go out in search of him. Panthro finds WilyKat, but falls victim to the effects of Thundranium too. Lion-O consults the Eye of Thundera and sees the plight of his friends. Lion-O ventures into the cave, with some Thundrillium crystals strapped to his chest and the Sword of Omens at hand. He rescues his friends, but the positive energy of the Sword has destabilised the structure of the cave. He makes it out just in time and all is right with the world!
'Trick or Treat' - text story (uncredited), art by Kirk Etienne
Someone is playing tricks on the Thundercats, and you'd be right in guessing it was the Thunderkittens. They think they have the perfect alibi, but good old Jaga tells tales on them!
'Letters to the Lair' - readers' letters. Questions included asking WilyKit how old she was (about 10) and who is the cleverest Thundercat (apparently it depended on what the reader meant by clever - Jaga and Lynx-O were the wisest, Pumyra and Cheetara the quickest-witted, Tygra was brilliantly clever in technical matters, Lion-O had the sharpest tactical mind and Panthro was none too shabby at engineering!).

'Fright on Fire Mountain!' - text story by John Freeman
Tygra has been captured by the Mutants and thrown into a pit of snakes. Panthro heads out on the Thunderclaw with Snarf, taking him because he is almost immune to snake bites. It's a race against time because the pit is in the path of a lava flow from Fire Rock Mountain and an eruption is expected soon. Snarf goes into the pit, tells Tygra the snakes are harmless and they escape. The Mutants appear, but Panthro sees them off in the Thunderclaw and they head home, happy in a job well done.
'Letters to the Lair' - readers' letters. Questions included the name of the place where Cat's Lair was built (the Plain of Fertility); how old is Jaga (much older than anyone else and now he's dead and immortal, he won't be getting any older) and how far is Mumm-Ra's Pyramid from the Lair (a long way - and they actually gave directions, so if you have your map, it's through the Forest of Silence, across the Living Ooze, over the River of Despair, through the Firetree Forest and over the Desert of Sinking Sands!).
