UK Issued Star ComicsEverything in this section is now accounted for. #73 BAD PLAYMATES PART 2 Issued 6 August 1988 Plot by James Rose. Art by Delbo, Simons Special thanks to Spaced Angel for the scans and information on this issue. The Thundercats are enjoying the hospitality of the Nai people when the festivities are interrupted by the appearance of a Sea Dragon. Cheetara distracts the dragon long enough for Lion-O to use the Sword of Omens on it. To everyone's surprise, the creature turns out to be Mumm-Ra in disguise. He vanishes, swearing vengeance, and the Thundercats return home to the news that the Thunderkittens are missing. They reappear from out of nowhere and it is Snarf who realises that this pair are not WilyKit and WilyKat, because they have blue eyes. 'Invisible Peril!' Text story by Dan Abnett Mumm-Ra stirs up Mongor to take vengeance on the Thundercats for his defeat at their hands. Later, Pumyra is out flying with the Thunderwings when she is attacked by a Skycutter that has no pilot. Meanwhile, Bengali and Tygra are using Stiltrunners when they too are attacked by a Mutant vehicle, a nosediver this time, that again is pilotless. Alerted to trouble, Lion-O gets on the case and tracks Mongor down to the Field of the Dagger Rocks. Sure enough, Mongor is holding Tygra, Bengali and Pumyra as his prisoners. Lion-O and Mongor fight, giving Panthro the chance to free their friends, and soon all is well again. #74 BAD PLAYMATES PART 3 Issued 13 August 1988 Plot by James Rose. Art by Delbo, Simons Special thanks to Spaced Angel for the scans and information on this issue. Sure enough, Snarf was right when he said that the blue-eyed Thunderkittens were not really WilyKit and WilyKat, but Thunderdecoys (!). The decoys deliver a message from Slithe, that he is holding the twins and wants ransom for their safe return within one hour. A dilemma ensues, in which Lion-O is torn between concern for the Thunderkittens' safety and the morality of paying Slithe a ransom. One hour later, Lion-O and Panthro go to Slithe with the ransom, but little does the Mutant know that he is being watched from a tree by Cheetara! 'Shapeshade!' Text story by Steve Alan Mumm-Ra is rumbling around his pyramid when Slitherweed the Many-Legged, a lesser ancient spirit of evil, who takes the form of a huge, one-eyed octopus, appears from out of the black waters of the cauldron. Slitherweed informs Mumm-Ra that the time of Geddontide is upon him, when his six brothers will return to claim vengence on him for exiling them to the winds of time, led by his father, Shapeshade. All this is revealed to Snowman at the Cave of the Vortex and after hearing this, he departs to tell the Thundercats. Mumm-Ra meanwhile is trying to put together a spell to keep Geddontide at bay. He fails and daddy appears, none too pleased to see him. #75 BAD PLAYMATES PART 4 Issued 20 August 1988 Plot by James Rose. Art by Delbo, Simons Special thanks to Spaced Angel for the scans and information on this issue. Just as Slithe thinks he has won, Lion-O calls the concealed Sword of Omens to his hand. A fight ensues, the Mutants are defeated and the Thunderkittens are freed. The kittens express regret for having been duped by the decoys and say they couldn't believe Lion-O would pay a ransom for them. Touchingly, he tells them that he would risk all the treasures of Third Earth to keep them from harm. Later, the others are kicking a ball around while Lion-O is pondering life, the universe and everything. Giving it up, he decides to join in the game instead and all are happy again. Plan of Cats' Lair 'The Sign of Six' Text story by Steve Alan Something funny is going on at Cats' Lair and Mumm-Ra and his family problems are behind it. Snowman arrives to tell the Thundercats about Geddontide just in time for Shapeshade the Mystic to put in an appearance. He tells them that the six brothers of Mumm-Ra are trying to get at him by sucking the very fabric of Third Earth into its own past, through six sacred portals of time, of which the Cave of the Vortex is one. Unless they find the Sign of Six, Third Earth will be destroyed! #76 TRIAL BY FIRE PART 1 Issued 27 August 1988 Written by Steve Alan. Art by Baskerville, Weasel This issue contains part one of Trial By Fire, and a text story called Shadrach-Tha!. The comic portion deals with the new ThunderCats - Pumyra, Bengali and Lynx-O - as they are anointed and get acquainted with their new home, Cats Lair. Pumyra, however, has a keen interest in the projection that shows the demies of Thundera. As she's reviewing the tape alone, the supposed spirit of Catamountain speaks to her and, after giving her the Star of Thundera, tells her to find justice in how the others fled Thundera. Therefore, she has Panthro and Lion-O drive her out to a remote place where she proceeds to demand they answer to the crime of high treason and that they pay with their lives. The test story deals with something called the Sign of Six, and how Mumm-Ra and the ThunderCats are both determined to go to the Berzerker's territory and get it. Trouble is, the 'Cats don't know what it looks like - just that it spells big trouble for them in the wrong hands. So, Lion-O and Cheetara don disguises and head off on this mission. A mysterious boatman (Shadrach-Tha) offers them passage, right before Cruncher charges for an attack - it's just unclear if Cruncher recognizes the ThunderCats or if he has a score to settle with the boatman. Apparently, this will be resolved in the next installment. #77 TRIAL BY FIRE PART 2 Issued 3 September 1988 Written by Steve Alan. Art by Baskerville, Weasel Special thanks to Spaced Angel for the scans and information on this issue. Pumyra is out for justice after being told that the Thundercats left her and her friends to die on Thundera. The court is in session at Fire Rock Mountain and is presided over by Catamountain the Lawgiver, the first Thundercat and maker of the Sword of Omens. Back at the Lair, Tygra, Bengali and Lynx-O are wondering what has happened to the others and go in search. Meanwhile, Catamountain is throwing his weight and Panthro and Lion-O about. By the time the others arrive, he is passing sentence by hurling Lion-O into the Thundranium pit. 'Path of the Storm!' Text story by Steve Alan Lion-O and Cheetara are on the trail of the Sign of Six, which has led them into the Kingdom of the Berserkers. Aboard the ship of a berserker called Cruncher, the two Thundercats are in disguise, along with another traveller, Shadrach-Tha, who they recognise as one of Mumm-Ra's brothers. A mystic storm brews at sea caused by Mumm-Ra, who appears and attacks the ship. Cheetara and Lion-O make it to the shore, where they find the Sign of Six, which turns out to be a six-turretted castle. #78 TRIAL BY FIRE PART 3 Issued 10 September 1988 Written by Steve Alan. Art by Baskerville, Weasel Special thanks to Spaced Angel for the scans and information on this issue. Pumyra saves Lion-O from a fiery end and confronts Catamountain about the fairness of the trial. Lion-O demands the right to prove his innocence and has to fight Pumyra, whom Catamountain claims he betrayed. Pumyra knocks him down with a single blow and Catamountain urges Pumyra to use the Star of Thundera to destroy all the Thundercats. Instead she turns the Star on him and he is revealed as Mumm-Ra. With the battle over, she wonders how she could have been so deceived, but Lion-O assures her that when it mattered she made the right choice. 'Geddontide!' Text story by Steve Alan The day of Geddontide is at hand and unless the Thundercats defeat the six brothers of Mumm-Ra, Third Earth will be destroyed. As Cheetara and Lion-O are about to enter the castle that is the Sign of Six, they are attacked by Berserkers. Taken prisoner, they are left in a chamber where Cheetara warns that the door must never be opened. The Berserkers do not heed her warning and open the door. The castle is destroyed and the threat to Third Earth is over. #79 WILYKAT'S WISH PART 1 Issued 17 September 1988 Written by Dwight Jon Zimmerman and Ian Rimmer. Art by Jim Mooney (pencils), Dave Harwood (inks), Dozy (letters) & Euan Peters (colour) Special thanks to Spaced Angel for the scans and information on this issue. WilyKat falls foul of Panthro for fooling around with the Sword of Omens. He goes off in a huff, sick of being treated like a child and saying that if he ever became leader, there would be some changes. Soon after, he meets Ilsa, last of the Dryads, who shows him the Waterfall of Wishes, telling him that its magic waters make wishes come true. WilyKat dives in and emerges an adult. He returns home to find that Lion-O is now the cub being told off by Panthro and he is leader of the Thundercats. 'Fire on the Water!' Text story Told as the Mission Log of Termargar the Tuska, Tygra has designed a flagship for the Tuskas and Cheetara and Panthro are on board for its maiden voyage. They come under attack by Berserkers and a fight ensues. The ship holds out and the Berserkers are defeated. #80 WILYKAT'S WISH PART 2 Issued 24 September 1988 Written by Dwight Jon Zimmerman and Ian Rimmer. Art by Jim Mooney (pencils), Dave Harwood (inks), Dozy (letters) & Euan Peters (colour) Special thanks to Spaced Angel for the scans and information on this issue. WilyKat starts to take charge as leader. He pushes the others to the limit with his demands and they are arguing just as a horde of Mutants appear. At that point, WilyKat realises he does not know how to use the mystic powers of the Sword of Omens and that they are in big trouble. 'The Luck Curse!' Text story by John Gatehouse Lion-O saves an old man from attack by Mongor. In thanks, the old man gives him an amulet. Unknown to Lion-O, the old man is Mumm-Ra in disguise and the amulet causes all sorts of bad luck to befall Lion-O, especially when the machine Panthro is working on backfires and the Sword of Omens is sucked into another dimension. Mumm-Ra captures the Lair and Lion-O ends up in a dungeon. Jaga appears and reminds him about accepting gifts from strangers, whereupon Lion-O makes the connection and discards the amulet, slipping it back to Mumm-Ra. Everything promptly goes wrong for Mumm-Ra and he loses the Lair. The Sword of Omens is found and everyone is happy again! #81 WILYKAT'S WISH PART 3 ![]() Issued 1 October 1988 Written by Dwight Jon Zimmerman and Ian Rimmer. Art by Jim Mooney (pencils), Dave Harwood (inks), Dozy (letters) & Euan Peters (colour) Special thanks to Spaced Angel for the scans and information on this issue. Continuation of ongoing story from last issue. WilyKat's wish to be older and become the Lord of the Thundercats is going disastrously wrong. The Sword of Omens won't obey him and the Thundercats are fighting a losing battle against the Mutants. WilyKat races back to the Waterfall of Wishes, only to find that he wished all that has happened to the Thundercats on himself. He strikes upon the bright idea of jumping into the Waterfall with Lion-O and soon both are restored to their rightful states. With Lion-O back in command, the other Thundercats are rescued and the Mutants are defeated. WilyKat confesses to what he did and says he has learned his lesson. Lion-O pats him on the back, makes a pithy comment and the Thundercats walk off into the sunset. 'Runaway' - Text Story by Steve Alan Panthro and Tygra are out in the Thundertank, giving Bengali a driving lesson (and it is stated categorically that he is Tygra's brother, probably the younger of the two). Impatient to learn more, Bengali takes the Thundertank out in his own. Back in the Lair, the Thundercats are alerted that someone is trying to steal the vehicle and head out after it. After an eventful drive, Bengali loses control and is rescued by Tygra, who had been following his 'little brother' in the Thunderclaw. Thunderchat - interesting questions on why the Thundercats Sticker book shows Lion-O in some Egyptian ruins on Third Earth (they aren't apparently; it said they were like Egyptian ruins so the reader would know what they looked like); whether Cheetara is Tygra's girlfriend (nope, they're just good friends according to Snarf) and whether Thundercats go to the toilet! #82 THE MEMORY CRYSTAL ![]() Issued 8 October 1988 Written by John Freeman. Art by Martin Griffiths (art), Dozy (letters) & Chris Matthews (colours). Special thanks to Spaced Angel for the scans and information on this issue. Bengali rushes into the Berbil village, claiming he remembers how a Berbil spaceship rescued him from Thundera. Ro-Ber-Bill explains that the Berbils were once an evil race and, after nearly causing their own extinction, they opted for a non-violent way of life. A device called the Memory Crystal absorbs the memory of Berbil power from all non-Berbils. However, it has become damaged and Ro-Ber-Bill declares that only the Eye of Thundera can mend it. Bengali agrees to help and tries to sneak the Sword of Omens out of the Lair. Lion-O catches him and they fight. After Bengali explains, Lion-O gives him the Star of Thundera to repair the broken crystal. 'Plun-darrcat!' - Text Story by Steve Alan Jackalman is having a hard time at Castle Plun-darr. Frightened by things going bump in the night and yelled at by Slithe for spoiling breakfast, he retreats to get some space. Vultureman meanwhile creates a walking talking Lion-O robot to defeat the Thundercats. Trying to think of some way to get back in Slithe's good books, Jackalman captures the robot Lion-O and destroys it. Slithe is not impressed.
