Production News:
Here's a tidbit of breaking news. I've been in recent contact with Peter Lawrence via email, and he so kindly gave his permission for me to publish his email in the Bulletin.
Seems the rumors may finally be put to rest. ThunderCats is definitely being revived for the small screen with an all new animated series in production. Peter was a writer/script consultant on the original series, and had this to tell me when I wrote to him inquiring about the rumors.
Dear Purrsia,
thanks for your note. Since we last "spoke," Masaki Iizuka (Pacific
Animation Corporation, original T/Cat animators) and I discussed a new
generation ThunderCats. Perhaps 3-D, or combo 2-D/3-D; probably a
series of
five full length or 1-hour pieces; aimed just as much at the original
fanbase
as at the kids' audience.
We then heard, just before Christmas, that Warners (who hold the
T/Cats
rights) are developing a new series - nothing to do with us, and
without any
input or contact. That more or less persuaded us to abandon our
efforts,
because we know that if Warners are planning their own production, they
won't
give us the necessary permissions.
I have no idea what Warners are actually doing, creatively, what
direction
they're taking, or anything else much. I'm a little disappointed that
they
haven't bothered to contact any of the original team, but that's par
for this
business. I should not be either surprised or disappointed. Perhaps
the
huge fanbase will rise up in outrage!
So the short answer to all this is that, sadly, I'm not working on
T/Cats
Version #2!
All best. Have a wonderful 2003.
Peter
